The Holy Quraan is the word of Allah that has been revealed for all the people in this universe. It is not like any other book. It is the message of Allah that has been sent down to all mankind to get them from complete darkness to the enlightenment era of Islam. It regulates everything in our life. Quraan has been even found to have multiple scientific miracles that are just being discovered now.
Quraan words and decorated style are unique. Its language itself was a miracle and a challenge from Allah to the people of Mecca at this time. Based on that, Quraan must be read, written, and recited accurately and clearly. This will help deliver the message of Allah as it has been sent down, without any sort of confusion or ambiguity. Mispronunciation of Quran will cause a great deal of misunderstanding for the words of Allah. That’s why many Quraanic verses stress on that Muslims need to recite Quran accurately;
“Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true recital. They [are the ones who] believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it – it is they who are the losers”
The above verse confirms that those who are reciting the Quraan in a proper way are those who believe in it. This means that learning to recite Quraan is a must for all Muslims. Other verses from Quraan deliver the same message;
“And recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style.”
And We have spaced It distinctly.”
Now, how can one recite the Quraan in the most accurate and proper way? Yes, we should properly apply the rules of Tajweed while reading Quraan.
The word means in Arabic; ‘proficiency’ or doing something very well. It is derived from the word jayyed in Arabic, which means good. When it comes to Quraan, the word means giving every letter its rights and dues of characteristics when reciting the Holy Quraan, and observing the rules that apply to those letters in different situations. In other words, Tajweed will make us recite the Holy Quraan the same way it has been recited by the Angel Gabriel, May Allah exalt his mention, to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). People at that time did not need to learn Tajweed as this was the way they were reading and speaking Arabic. That is not the case at the moment due to the different accents of Arabic that exist all over the world, in addition to the slang Arabic used.
Tajweed can be considered as a kind of a tongue twister in order to adjust our tongue to pronounce Arabic the same way Old Arabs used to pronounce it. It takes care of the articulation of each letter and its rules. Not knowing accurately these rules of articulation and dues of each letter would cause confusion and might change the meaning of certain words/verses when we recite the Holly Quraan.
Tajweed will help us clear 2 types of mistakes as divided by scholars. The first one is called “clear mistakes”. These mistakes often alter obvious things which lead to the change of the meaning. Learning and applying tajweed rules that help avoiding these mistakes is a must (fard Ayen) on each Muslim. All Muslims have to learn and apply them. The second type of mistakes is called “hidden mistakes”. As the name suggests, they do not change the meaning. They will help us recite Quraan the way it has been sent down from Allah. Learning and studying such tajweed rules that help Muslims avoid these mistakes are not a must (Fard Kefaya). Some Muslims need to learn them, and not all. Personally, I would prefer to learn them as well to be one of the best and to gain the satisfaction of Allah.
Initially Muslims used to learn Tajweed through mosques or schools where there would be an Imam or a Sheikh who teaches them and help them apply the rules. This does not happen at the moment. It might sound easy to learn Tajweed rules independently, but their correct application can only be done by listening to, reciting to, and being corrected by a qualified Sheikh. Unfortunately not all Arabs can recite Quraan with tajweed, due to the reasons mentioned above. The question would be where can I go to learn Tajweed?
The answer is definitely www.learn-arabicquraan.com. You do not need to go anywhere. Just a good internet connection and we will provide you with one of the best Sheikhs to help you learn and apply the rules of Tajweed.
